R Dev Day

R Core developer Martin Maechler working with Ella Kaye and Kelly Bodwin at an R Dev Day R Core developer Martin Maechler working with Ella Kaye and Kelly Bodwin at an R Dev Day

R Dev Days are day-length events for new and experienced contributors to work collaboratively on contributions to base R. The R Dev Days page on the R Contributors site has more information on this series of events.

R Dev Day @ useR! 2026 is a free, hybrid event that will take place on July 10, the day after the conference concludes.

What will happen at the R Dev Day?

Tasks are prepared in the run-up to the event, but commonly include:

  • Reviewing, analysing and fixing code or documentation bugs reported on R’s Bugzilla.
  • Contributing to message translations via Weblate.

Tasks may also relate to contributor infrastructure, such as the R Dev Guide and the R Dev Container.

Who can take part?

The main criteria for participation is a good knowledge of R programming and a keen interest in contributing, as we hope participants continue to contribute after the event.

We strongly encourage self-nominations from members of historically underrepresented groups in R development, including members of R-Ladies and rainbowR, and people from the Global South. Registration at useR! 2026 is not required to participate in R Dev Day.

How much does it cost?

R Dev Day is free to attend. We regret that support is not available for travel or accommodation.

Nominate yourself

Places at this R Dev Day are limited. Rather than open registration, participants will be selected from self-nominations, balancing across experience levels and giving opportunity to members of historically underrepresented groups.

To nominate yourself, please complete the nomination form by April 24. We aim to notify applicants of the outcome of their nomination by May 8.

We encourage people to self-nominate even if their attendance depends on other applications being successful (e.g. for a useR! presentation or visa).

Venue

R Dev Day will be held at the Warsaw University of Technology, where the useR! 2026 tutorials are being held. See the venue page for details of how to reach the campus. A small number of places will be reserved for remote participants, novice contributors should be available for the full day (09:00 to 17:00 CEST UTC+2).
